Adinkra Kasa

Kwame Brenya a thirty five year old writer who also performs the form of spoken words and palm wine music had a book talk with some students at the AMA ATA AIDOO center for creative writing on the 3rd of April 2024 at the African University college of Communication.

The young artist studied BSc materials engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.

The presentation by Kwame Brenya on his published anthology ADINKRA, KASA! and the philosophy within the Adinkra language brought more light to some students on the meaning behind certain Akan names and symbols.

Kwame Brenya meaning Kwa Bre Nyame, had said that Hmmm which is a response to hmmm is a deep breath that you take within you which makes you calm.

He told us about how he got possessed by the Adinkra language using a water body as an example, “when I got to the Adinkra language, the Adinkra inspired me and I got possessed by the Adinkra language”, Kwame Brenya had said.

Kwame Brenya went on to teach us about the  “Gye Nyame” symmetry that  tells us that what is on earth is the same as what is above earth, and it’s not just a plastic chair but the supremacy of the creator. The Nk)ns)k)s) which means chains in English is not just a chain but a sign and a language of unity and togetherness,

As he elaborated us more on the Adinkra symbols he used in his books, he went ahead to ask some students questions based on the symbols, where students who answered won themselves a ticket for his program the next day.

The interview with Ivan a level 400 student was a good one as he looked soo happy after the program “ I have gained more knowledge on Akan languages and words that I didn’t expect, some common words I did not even know, I’m so enlightened “, he had said.

“Can we do this again, Kwame Brenya is very intelligent, I think he should be teaching Akan language in the school”, a level 200 student said during the interview.
